Child's First Appointment

At Viva Dental Clinic, our main goal is to help kids grow healthy mouths. We recommend having the first dental checkup when the first tooth comes in, usually around 6 months, or by the age of 1. This lets us watch how the teeth are coming in and teach good habits to prevent dental problems.

But if you didn’t do this when your child was younger, don’t worry. It’s always a good time to start, and we’re here to work with you to make a dental care plan that’s just right for your child’s age.

At what age should my child see the dentist for the first time?

We’re really happy to welcome young children, and we strongly believe that starting to take care of their teeth when they’re little helps set the stage for good oral health in the future. Our recommendation is for kids to start coming in for dental visits around 6 months after their first tooth comes in, or when they turn 1.

This approach helps us keep track of how their teeth are growing, teach them good habits, prevent possible dental problems, and get them used to the dental office. This can also help reduce any nervous feelings as they get older. And remember, it’s never too late to start practicing healthy habits. Even if your child is older than 1, we encourage you to bring them in.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When should my child have their first dental visit?
Most pediatric dentists recommend booking a first dental appointment by your child’s first birthday or within 6 months of the first tooth coming in.

  • What happens at a child’s first dentist appointment?
A kids dental checkup is usually short and gentle: a quick exam of teeth and gums, bite/jaw check, cavity risk assessment, and parent guidance on brushing, diet, and habits (thumb sucking, soothers).

  • How do I prepare my child for their first dental appointment?
Keep it positive and simple: say they’re going for a “tooth count” and a “smile check.” Avoid words like “needle” or “pain.” Bring a comfort item, and choose a time when your child is well-rested.

  • Should I choose a pediatric dentist or a family dentist for my child?
A pediatric dentist specializes in children’s care (behaviour guidance, kid-friendly tools, growth monitoring). Many family dentists also do excellent children’s visits—especially for routine exams.

  • Will my child get a cleaning at the first visit?
Often yes—if your child is comfortable. The dentist or hygienist may do a gentle children’s teeth cleaning, polish, and show proper brushing/flossing techniques.

  • Does my child need dental X-rays at the first appointment?
Not always. Dental X-rays for kids are only taken when needed (risk of cavities, pain, crowding concerns, or hard-to-see areas). The goal is minimal exposure with proper protection.

  • Is fluoride treatment safe for children, and will they need it?
Fluoride varnish for kids is commonly used and considered safe when applied by a dental professional. It may be recommended based on cavity risk, diet, and enamel strength.

  • What should I bring to my child’s first dental visit?
Bring your child’s health card/insurance info, a list of any medications/allergies, and any concerns (teething, sleep grinding, mouth breathing). If you have them, bring previous dental records.

  • How long does a first-time child dental appointment take?
Typically 20–40 minutes, depending on your child’s age, comfort level, and whether a cleaning or fluoride is done.

  • How much does a child’s first dental visit cost in Canada, and is it covered?
Costs vary by province and what’s included (exam, cleaning, fluoride, X-rays). Many families use private dental insurance; some children may qualify for public coverage options depending on province and eligibility. It’s best to ask the clinic for a quick estimate before your appointment.
